THEME
The design reflects the theme, Kokoro 心 – One Blossom, One Community, One Heart. The idea behind this phrase is that each year, we come together as one to embrace and celebrate Japanese culture with people from all cultures and backgrounds, fostering Japantown’s supportive community spirit.
CONCEPT
The design of the poster was influenced by Japantown’s rich history of origami. To evoke the idea of having an open heart and coming together as one, a literal approach was taken where the poster can be folded to create an origami heart that opens to reveal the Circle of the Sun (Hinomaru,日の丸) the theme of this year, and the full poster for the festival.
Design Approach
Designing a poster that can work as a standalone design but still have the transformation factor was very difficult. Small changes can throw off the whole design, shown on the drafts above.
